7th April 2013 - Brands Hatch - Solid Start to the Season by Joe Burns

April 5th, 6th and 7th saw the opening round of the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship, and who would have predicted that the race would be run in bright sunshine and a balmy 10°C? Particularly as when the team set up on Thursday it was snowing!

With 60 entries two qualifying periods are used to establish a grid for the Sunday feature race and a Saturday race for the slower competitors. The John Guest Speedfit Kawasaki ran faultlessly, with Joe qualifying 6th on Friday and 6th on Saturday, aggregate times from these two qualifying periods put Joe 12th on the grid for the Sunday feature race, and clearly in the top 20% of the field.

The race strategy was clear, keep clear of any first corner mayhem and put in good consistent lap times, and it went to plan, despite a slightly hesitant start caused by the sideways gradient of the Brands Hatch grid, Joe worked his way forward to finish a thrilling race in 8th place and with the credit for the fastest lap at 47.342 seconds. This was achieved on the 19th lap, proof that the 2013 Pirelli tyres on the John Guest Speedfit Kawasaki last well.

Joe left Brands Hatch with 8 points on the championship score sheet and now heads to the fastest circuit in the UK, Thruxton in Hampshire for the 14th April race day.

Brands Hatch - 14th October 2012

It was a ultimately a frustrating finale to the season's racing for Joe...

Went out in free practice and had the wrong gearing on the bike, and it wouldn't pull clean out of the corners (gearing too tall).

I worked out the correct gearing for the first qualifying, bike was infinitely better and almost a second a lap faster instantly. At the start of the 3rd lap I got a couple of massive rear end slides, pulled into pit lane to check what the issue was and the water jacket on the oil cooler had split, spraying water on the rear tyre. Couldn't do anything about it for that session as it is quite a long job to change. So that was that session over. The fault of the water jacket on the oil cooler splitting is quite common on the Kawasaki, but as yet, they haven't modified it.

Bought a new oil cooler and fitted it on for qualifying two. Done a few steady laps to settle in, and then started to go for it. The motor didn't appear to be pulling quite so clean as it did before, and a vibration started to come through the footrests. This vibration became more noticeable after a few laps, then turned into a knocking noise under load when exiting turns. I retired to the pits immediately and decided to call it a day, as it was quite apparent the engine was going to let go if I carried on.

The engine problem was probably caused with relation to the failure of the oil cooler and the massive increase in engine temperature. So all in all, it was a very disappointing weekend. But that's racing - just got to get set for next season now!

We're already looking forward to it!

Silverstone - Sunday 30th September 2012

After an engine failure in the first qualifying session followed by a few gearbox issues 10th on the grid with the spare engine for the start of the race was an achievement.

Joe made his way through the leading bikes with a credible ride into 4th position. Despite making up ground through the curves and braking zones, the lack of speed on the straights (with the spare engine) made it impossible to find the podium finish this weekend. All things considered a well fought for 4th place finish was an extremely good result.

Joe hopes to have the fast motor re-installed ready for Brands Hatch in the final Round 12 on 12th – 14th October.

Donnington Park - Sunday 9th September 2012

I was constantly within the top few of the time sheets all weekend, I qualified on the front row in 4th position. I made a bad start, lost positions and came through in 10th on the first lap. As it was a 15 lap race, I didn't panic and moved through to 9th, 8th, 7th, 6th, 5th, 4th, and by the end of lap 11 I was in 3rd position, setting the fastest lap of the race and closing down on the leading duo. But unfortunately I trailed the front brake just a little too hard into the Melbourne loop hairpin and lost the front - race over!

But the positives I got from the weekend is that I can run at the front amongst the factory boys, and I'm confident I can put the bike on the podium again in the last two rounds.
